Dealing with the emotional strain of infertility

People often don’t talk about the heartbreak of not being able to get pregnant or suffering from a miscarriage. It is difficult to walk around feeling like life is unfair as you watch so many other people get pregnant when you are really struggling to conceive or stay pregnant. Infertility and the emotional stress that comes with it can put serious strain on your relationships with everyone, not just your partner.

Really considering where you are emotionally, mentally and physically is very important, and is the first step you can take to come to terms with your situation. Acknowledging your feelings is also important. Accepting that for a while you might feel sad, disappointed, or angry and you are allowed that time to let those emotions out. Being open and discussing these feelings with your partner will also help let out some of these emotions and your partner may be having very similar feelings to you. It is okay to say no to the social events like christenings and baby showers if you know they are going to make you unhappy. Only you know what you are comfortable with and when you are ready to go to these events again.

Reducing your stress can be beneficial in feeling better and to increase your fertility, address your work/life balance and consider how to improve it. This is not the time to feel like your work load is getting on top of you, when you are already feeling stressed. The more stress you feel on a regular basis the more disruption there will be on your hormones.

Make time for things you enjoy and what makes you happy, make taking care of yourself a priority. It can be as simple as reading a book, taking a long bath and saying no to things that you feel obligated to attend that might overextend you. You are your priority.

Considering your relationship and nourishing it is also important. You are still on this journey together and so making time for each other can really help the relationship. Why not take a weekend away together and bring back the romance? It can bring you closer to your partner and help you relieve your own personal stress
