I often get asked if you can overcome PCOS for you to get pregnant naturally. The answer is yes, but it may take time!  In some cases, I find it may be as easy as detoxing hormonal contraceptives or balancing the thyroid.  Some cases can be complicated and take time and effort, but it is worth it!

What are the main signs and symptoms of PCOS?

  • Irregular and heavy periods

Irregular cycles with longer than 35 days between cycles.  Heavy periods can also be an indication of PCOS

  • Excess Androgens

Androgens are a group of hormones that play a role in male characteristics.  Signs of excess androgens would include increased body or facial hair, acne and male pattern baldness.

  • Polycystic ovaries

Enlarged ovaries.  Follicles may surround the eggs in the ovary, causing the ovaries not to function correctly.

What are the leading causes of PCOS?

The cause of PCOS is not always exact, but here are a few factors that would contribute to PCOS.

  • Insulin resistance

Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas to help cells to use glucose as energy.  When the cells become resistant to insulin, the body produces more insulin which in turn leads to an increase in androgen production.

  • Genetics

PCOS can run in families.  If relatives like your mother, sister or aunt have it, you are at a higher risk of developing it too.

  • Thyroid

Hypothyroid can cause PCOS like ovaries.  If your thyroid hormones are out of balance, it can worsen PCOS and make you more likely to be insulin resistance.

  • Hormonal contraceptives

While the Pill is often prescribed to women to treat PCOS, I often see in my clinic the opposite.  Studies have shown that the Pill causes permanent hormone changes, even once it is stopped.

  • Homeopathic treatment

Homeopathy treats the person as a whole and looks at all different aspects of you.  Thyroid, insulin resistance and hormone balance all come into play.  Homeopathic detox is excellent to restore hormone balance after the use of hormonal contraceptives.

  • Supplements

I would always advise you to speak to a professional before taking supplements to ascertain your requirements and needed dosage levels.

The following supplements may be useful in cases of PCOS

  • Chromium
  • Magnesium
  • Zinc
  • Vitamin D
  • Coenzyme Q10
  • Diet and lifestyle

A healthy diet and lifestyle are essential building blocks in overcoming PCOS naturally.  A lowercarb and sugar-free diet can help lower insulin resistance as the body will need less insulin.
